  • the iwi of tamaki makaurau decended from the people of the tainui canoe other decendents were Te kawerau-a-maki, These decendents setted in Maraetai Whitford and Howick
  • from the 1600-1750 the tamaki tribes built pā across the isthmus. they also planted over 2000 hectares of kumara. the population grew to tens of thousands. it was pre-European New Zeanland's most wealthy and populous area
  • from 1740-1750 Ngati Whatua-o-Kaipara moved south invading the isthmus and killing them. the conquerors secured dominance of the isthmus by intermarrying the Nga Oho, descendents of the Wai-o-Hua
  • during the early 18th century the Ngati Paoa people edged their way into the Hauraki Gulf as far as Mahurangi. There followed a period of time which made the tamaki tribes vulnerable to attack
  • in 1821, wanting to avenge previous defeats the Ngapuhi leader Hongi Hika luanched an attack on the region with over 2000 men he stormed 2 Ngati Paoa Pa killing hundreds and enslaving hundreds more
  • in 1825 Ngapuhi attacked again. This time the target was Ngati Whatua. The battle was fought near the Kaiwaka although Ngati Whatua had over 100 warriors. The 500 strong invading force was armed with muskets. Apihai te Kawau. Chief of the Ngati Whatua abandoned the isthmus and took his people into exile
