from 1740-1750 Ngati Whatua-o-Kaipara moved south invading the isthmus and killing them. the conquerors secured dominance of the isthmus by intermarrying the Nga Oho, descendents of the Wai-o-Hua

in 1825 Ngapuhi attacked again. This time the target was Ngati Whatua. The battle was fought near the Kaiwaka although Ngati Whatua had over 100 warriors.
