The ink blots symbolizes Charlie’s growing intelligence and his change as he grows smarter. He begins to be more aware of the world as his intelligence increases and shows emotion like anger, while taking the test when he became smarter. At first he could not see any images in the ink, but after the operation he saw pictures. The images in the ink blot represent Charlie’s inner conflict with between his smart self and his dumb self.

Algernon
Algernon symbolizes Charlie’s fate, the dangers of Charlie’s journey and the consequences of the experiment. Algernon is represents Charlie’s path, including the rise of intellect and the eventual decline, and the intellect Charlie wants. He also represents how Charlie feels trapped like Algernon in a cage because they are not viewed as individuals but just subjects in the experiment.
