- Our main character has just woken up for a third time after being sedated by the robot arms. When he can remember his name, he will get more privileges.
- Glide: 2
- Dr. Grace explains the situation to his middle school class in a flashback.
- Astrophage is starting to absorb a lot of the sun's energy. Well, not a lot. Just a tiny percentage. But that means Earth gets a tiny bit less sunlight. And that can cause real problems.
- It'll be bad. Very bad. A lot of animals-entire species- will die out because their habitats are too cold. The ocean water will cool down too and it might even cause an entire food chain collapse. So the things that could survive at lower temperatures will starve too death because the things they eat all die off
- So it'll be a little colder? Like a degree or two? What's the big deal?

- War, famine, pestilence, and death. Astrophage is literally the apocalypse. The Hail Mary is all we have now. I'll make any sacrifice to give it even the tiniest additional chance of success.

- Stratt comes to see Dr. Grace in his cell that she put him in. She is forcing him to go on the trip against his will because she feels he is the best option.
