- Shmuel ! What are you doing here ?
- Bruno !
- I'm sorry Shmuel , I should have given you some chicken too . Are you hungry ?
- In the living room , Mother bumped into Bruno and Lieutenant Kotler , she then told Bruno that she was going to have a private word with Kotler and needed him to run along into the kitchen for a moment . After that , Kotler closed the door n Bruno's face and Bruno was seething with anger .
- Shmuel ! Here ! Just eat them . There's lots left for our tea - you don't have to worry about that .
- When Bruno walked into the kitchen , he got the biggest surprise . There , he saw Shmuel polishing glasses and he greeted Shmuel with surprise and Shmuel broke into a broad smile .
- Tell me , Bruno ! I won't ask you a third time .
- I've never spoken to him , I've never seen him before in my life . I don't know him .
- Bruno and Shmuel then started chatting and Bruno took out some chicken from the fridge and realized that Shmuel was looking at the the slices of chicken and stuffing . So he convinced Shmuel to try some . However , Shmuel was scared of Lieutenant Kotler .
- Bruno and Shmuel started to talk about if Shmuel should try the slices . But Bruno ignored him and gave him some slices and convinced him to eat .
- When Bruno was about to offer Shmuel more food , Lieutenant Kotler came in and when he saw Shmuel talking , he became furious and shouted at Shmuel . He then asked Bruno if he was friends with Shmuel and Bruno was too terrified to answer . Bruno then lied and said that he didn't know Shmuel or see him before in his life . Kotler was satisfied with the answer and told Bruno to get away from Shmuel .
- Every afternoon that followed , Bruno returned to the place in the fence where he met with Shmuel , but Shmuel was never there .
