- When the story begins, we are introduced to Della and Jim. They are a poor couple who live in the 20th century. The story takes place on Christmas Eve.

- Della wants to buy Jim a great Christmas present that he deserves, however, she has only been able to save up $1.87, which is not enough.
- Falling Action
- Della decides that she can sell her hair for money, and then use that money to buy Jim a present. She receives $20 for her hair and purchases a platinum fob chain for Jim's watch, which is a family heirloom.
- Resolution
- When Jim returns home from his day's work, he and Della exchange gifts. In a surprising turn of events, it turns out that Jim sold his watch to buy Della a beautiful comb for her hair. As a result of this, neither one will be able to use their gifts.
- Della and Jim decide to put their gifts away for the time being and that they will use them later.

- Regardless of the mistakes, Della and Jim still love each other very much, and they learn an important lesson about sacrifice and love.
