Jude is very important in this story as she faces many obstacles just because of her skin color. On her way to UCLA her bus driver describes her when he says, "that lean boyish body, those long legs...he'd never seen a woman that black before" (Bennett 81). Everywhere she goes the first thing people notice s how dark her skin is and it turns people away from her.
Since Desiree separated Jude from her father when she was young she doesn't have a good memory of him. He pops into her head from time to time like when she started to have dreams about hm. The author discusses this when she says, "she started to dream bout her father...I don't even know why. We haven't talked in so long" (Bennett 134). In her dreams she creates scenarios of her and her dad hanging out to fill in the empty memories of her dad.
When Jude meet Reese she felt relieved to find someone that didn't just notice her skin color but actually enjoyed being around her. They end up hanging out a lot and developing feelings. Jude didn't think anybody would like her so she pushes Reese away at first when she says, "I know you don't like me. Not like that. And it's okay" (Bennett 121). They soon end up making love and begin their long-term relationship,
How does the character look?
Since Jude didn't have any friends because of her skin color she always kept to herself and read books. The author explains this when she says, "Aside from that, quiet. Flipping through a worn detective novel...which she was reading for the second time to find all the clues she'd missed" (Bennett 81). She would find things to do in her free time and she found an interest in books so vene though she may be older she still enjoys staying to herslef and reading.
What does the character think about?
After living in Mallard for majority of her life, Jude gets a scholarship to attend UCLA for track. This is a big step for her but she's ready to leave and see life out of Mallard. The author describes this when she says, "She'd already accepted the track scholarship from UCLA-as if she could even think about turning down..."It'll be fine, Mama. I'll come back and see you" (Bennett 83). She is sad to leave her mom but is ready for what life is like outside of Mallard and what possibilities are waiting for her.
Who does the character love?
One thing Jude always loved to do was run. In Mallard she would sometimes run away in the backyard for hours. She found in relaxing and stress-relieving. The author talks about this when she says, "She was sixteen then, sneaking out for a late-night run" (Bennett 108). She enjoyed it so much that she would sneak out of the house to go for a run. This obsession eventually led her to a UCLA scholarship where she did great things.
