In 1724, French fur traders came to South Carolina. The British felt the need to sign a treaty with the Cherokees to prevent the French from trading with them. The Cherokees though they had an alliance but the British saw it differently; the British saw it as a sign they had full control over the Cherokee.
No more protection
Our horses now!
30 years passed in peace and the British and Cherokees were getting along fine. They traded with each other and there were no conflict or wars until the French and Indian war came along and broke the peace. Cherokees expected protection from the british to come but it never came.
Cherokee War
They killed him!
When the French and Indians attacked the Cherokees, the British were nowhere to be seen. This made the Cherokees mad as they had thought the British would come and help because of the treaty. The Cherokee began to attack the British since they felt as though they've been wronged.
No more land
It's time to move, we can't stay here anymore.
Why?
Even though the Cherokees liked the British, they were mad at the British for not protecting them. Due to this, the Cherokees stole British horses to get back at them. The British attacked the Cherokee because of that and the Cherokees likewise, defended against those attacks. The British no longer gave the Cherokees protection.
This led to the Cherokee War between Britain and Cherokees. It went on from 1758 to 1761 and many Cherokees died, more so than the British soldiers. The British had better technology compared to the Cherokees so the Cherokees lost the war.
In the end, the Cherokees had lost so they had to give up most of their land to Britian. They signed a treaty and that created a border seperating between the colony land and the Cherokee land. The British remained as powerful as before and the Cherokee lost their land and people.
