In Isiuwa, nobody was free to be an individual. Everyone was controlled by the Elders who maintained control by making everyone fear the dunes and the wrath of the whistling gods. Tasé's father was the Chief, and he warned that anyone who went beyond the village would be taken by the dunes. Our mothers did not believe the Elders and escaped. At first, we didn't understand why they left, but we do now.

Isiuwa sounds like where I am from originally. We also had a group of Elders who controlled everything. They chose what everyone would be or do with their lives. Our society had no color or emotions, and we were forced to take pills to control how we felt. Anyone who was different, too old, too weak, or a threat to sameness was killed. The Elders brainwashed everyone and said that these people were released to a place called Elsewhere. Like you, I escaped and risked my life to do so.

Sounds like we have a lot in common. Where I come from, nobody has memories of the past. The Elders made me the Keeper of Memories, and this allowed me to see the past and the truth. It opened my eyes to the lies of the Elders, and I had to get out of there.
In Isiuwa, there was nowhere else. The Chief spoke of the time before the sand and dunes, but we were not really permitted to learn about it. We were told no other civilizations existed, but we knew they were lying.
