  • The Confederacy
  • Southern Confederacy NewlyFormed(February 4, 1861)
  • Lincoln promised the south that we wouldn't change slavery laws for them but the southerners did not believe him. In 1860 in South Carolina, the south voted to leave the union like the north feared.
  • Reaction to the Secession
  • Preserve the Union!
  • As more southern states started to debate seceding too, Kentucky Senator John Crittenden proposed to protect slavery south of the longitude set by the Missouri Compromise but both sides did not like this idea.
  • Presidential Responses
  • In 1861, six other southern states seceded like South Carolina had. Delegates from the seceded states met in Alabama in February and created a new government, calling it the Confederacy. While the north didn't like it, the south could not be held from leaving.
  • Most Southerners were happy with this and joined the Confederacy, The north had mixed feelings. Some thought it was the best thing for the Union while others believed they needed to preserve the Union.
  • The current President at the time, Buchanan, said that the south had no right to leave the Union but also said that he could not stop them. At Lincoln's inauguration, he said that the South should not seceded and hoped for peace.
  • We are not enemies!
