  • Ona Judge was born in 1773 to an enslaved women and a english indentured man.
  • At the age of 10, Ona was brought to live inside of the Mt Vernon Estate along with a handful of other slaves.
  • Being one of Martha Washington's favorite it wasn't long after she became her personal attendant at the age of only 16. Young Oney still a child was at Martha's beck and call as well as attending to the Washington's grandchildren. 
  • Oney was able to enjoy some of lives simple pleasures like going into town and occasionally the theater. Although she was afforded these opportunities she was still an enslaved woman. The idea of leaving the Washington's was always on her mind.
  • Ona was faced with a difficult decision does she stay and risk being enslaved forever or did she value her freedom more than anything in the world. As the Washingtons prepared to make the journey to Philadelphia. Ona knew that her freedom was priceless she took a boat to Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
  • Two days following her escape May 24, 1796 an ad was advertising the abandonment of Martha Washington's slave a young Oney Judge. A $10 reward was offered to any person regardless of race that would retrieve and return her.
