When Missouri wanted to become a slave state, it led to major problems. It would upset the balance of power between free and slave states. To solve this issue, they decided to compromise
In order for Missouri to become a state, they would need to add another free state. In 1820 Missouri entered as a slave state and Maine entered as a free state
Congress also wanted to solve future problems with slavery. They created a line at 36 30 (also known as the Missouri Compromise line) in which slavery would be banned north of

Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 included 5 main articles
The main article admitted California into the union as a free state. They also created the New Mexico and Utah territories which were open to slavery
To please the South, Congress added a stricter Fugitive Slave Law. This made it illegal to help escaped slaves and made it easier for slave owners to get their escaped slaves back

Kansas-Nebraska Act
Stephen Douglass wanted to build a railroad through the new territories. To gain the South's support, he proposed that the Kansas and Nebraska territories would vote for whether they wanted slavery or not
After that decicion, thousands of Pro-Slavery settlers migrated to Kansas to vote illegaly
The two sides started to get violent. Over 200 people would die in the events known as Bleeding Kansas
