Edith approaches anne's diary, although she was a bit hesitant at first because she knows that it;s an invasion of her privacy. Edith still decides to do it anyway.
Isn't this Anne's diary? It couldn't hurt to take a peek.

Edith reads her diary and finally comes to sense of what Anne withnks of her. Edith regrets opening the book and she's devastated that Anne, her own daughter would feel that way about her mother.
Is this really how Anne thinks of me?
Has she always thought this way about me?
I don't believe I favor Margot over Anne, I love them both the same!
I can't believe she actually thanks of me as a monster!
Edith decided to go confront Anne and explain all of her misshapes.

WHen Edith confronted Anne she really didn't know how it was going to go, she wanted Anne to just talk to her and explain calmly. Anne yelled at her continuously for an invasion of personal space and the that was mentioned in the diary like the rude jokes.
You read my diary? How could you! That's for me to read and write, not for others!
They didn't talk for about a week after this argument. but then they finally came to their senses where they need to clear the air and take it out with each other.
