This course in cultural anthropology opened my mind and introduced me to so many diverse cultures. It is a funny thing to say, but before taking this class, I didn’t have the correct knowledge of what this course would consist of and what it would teach me. I enrolled because I saw it would satisfy one of my credits and hoped for the best. I learned that cultural anthropology is the study of cultures and societies of humans, which is done through fieldwork, studies, research methods, and genuine interest in the field. This course changed my perspective of the world in the best way possible, and it has made me aware that some cultures are more diverse and others are more similar than I previously thought.

Learning about races/ethnicities, gender/sexualities, and cultural relativism will help me in the future of when I pursue my career in hospitality. Having the comprehension that I do now allows me to communicate respectfully and understand people who have diverse cultures, genders, and sexualities. Recognizing the difference between races (social construct that is based off physical characteristics), ethnicity (shared customs and culture), gender (socially and culturally connected stereotypical traits and behaviors to one’s sex: “male,” “female," and other), and sexuality (one’s patterned attraction towards others) will ensure I don’t say something that is inappropriate or offensive to customers. If I continued into this field with the knowledge on these terms I began this course with, I could make assumptions that would offend guests, which goes against my morals. Cultural relativism allows me to appreciate and allows me to be interested in cultures that are similar and different than mine.

The terms I will remember in 5 years are ethnocentrism, cultural relativism, globalization, and animism. These stood out to me when reading the materials and watching the documentaries/videos. The reason ethnocentrism and cultural relativism will still be remembered by me in 5 years is because after discovering these terms and their definitions, they have shaped the way I view other cultures. I sadly recognize that many people have an ethnocentric view (one thinking their own culture is ‘better,’ ‘more right,’ or ‘superior’ to other cultures), which is limiting and makes one seem naïve. Utilizing cultural relativism (everyone’s beliefs and traditions should be recognized without them being criticized) when making new connections to diverse people has helped me be more knowledgeable, relatable, and kind. Globalization intrigued me because of its massive effect on today and the future. It’s where technologies, languages, foods, media, and other elements of life become universal throughout different countries. I see this specifically occurring with streaming services, social media, and chain restaurants. I feel this will expand and become even more in the future. Lastly, animism captivated my attention because of my own personal interest in learning about belief systems. It’s where living and non-living things all have supernatural force existing inside of them that makes everything alive. This could range from animals and humans or items and weather all having their own individual soul or spirit. It’s fascinating how culturally different we can be, yet we share the human experience.
