- your Grandfather grew up in a very small town and when he was young the KKK had power in both of the counties next to his
- Maretta, Indiana 1961
- In 1961 if you joined the military before the draft you got to pick where you went. My dad wanted to be in the air force.
- The proudest i had ever been to have the last name Treon is when your grandfather first told me the story of his bus ride down to boot camp
- When he got on the bus the only people were three black men, my dad never found out if they knew each other or not.
- There was not a lot of talking, so it was a very long drive down to the base in Texas.
- Along the way the bus stopped and picked up more men all of them, white
- More and more men got on the only talking were the racial slurs coming from the hicks.
- The last stop they made before they got to the base was a combined gas station and diner. All the men got up in to go to the bathroom
- Your grandpa was near the back and he could hear the black men talking when he noticed it, there was a sign above the bathroom that said whites only.
- He knew that this was wrong, that theses men were maybe giving up their life for these country bums to have their freedom but they could not use the bathroom.
- My dad was twenty years old, a thousand miles away from home but he knew what was right and wrong. I will never in my life do something that brave. i have never been more proud to have the last name Treon when told me that story

- They were totally outnumbered but he knew that he had to do something

- It sure was a good thing that he had a 29 inch waist and spent his summers molding concrete.

- They all went into the diner together and while the men were in the bathroom he stood outside with his arms crossed.

- he waited for all three to get back on the bus safely before he did anything
