I guess he must’ve thought if he had a twenty-four-year-old girl on his arm, then he must be a young man again somehow.’” (pg 61)Jamee: Mom doesn’t seem to know what’s really going on with Jamee: Mom thinks that the Jamee is fine. “Jamee usually ate her dessert right after dinner, especially when it was Mom’s apple pie, but she left the table tonight without touching it. ‘I’ve got to study for a history quiz,’ she said. Mom seemed very pleased. Mom winked at Darcy as if to say, ‘See, her interest in school is finally blooming. She’s hitting her stride like I said she would.’” (pg 96)Darcy: Mom trusts Darcy with grandma and seems to trust Darcy to take care of the house while she’s at work. “ Darcy was usually the first one home. The minute she got there, Mom left for the hospital to take the 3:00 to 11:00 shift in the ER. By the time Mom finished her paperwork at the hospital, she would be lucky to be home again by midnight.” (pg 11)
- Memories: Her husband leaving“It’s just that he was growing older too. That bothered him a lot—mid-life crisis, you know. He’d tell me all the time, ‘Mattie, I’m in my forties. You know how old that is? No man in my family ever lived to be fifty, so I’m almost dead, and all I’ve ever done is sell vacuum cleaners and live in a crappy neighborhood.’ He just sort of went crazy thinking he hardly had any time left, and he wanted something to make him feel young again. ” (pg 61 )
