Offred(June)
Offred (possibly called June) is the main character and narrator in the book "The Handmaid's Tale". She is a handmaid for Commander Waterford and his wife, Serena Joy, meaning her sole purpose is to reproduce. Offred is intelligent, observant, and resourceful, but scared of the republic. Despite the constant surveillance, she manages small acts of rebellion which help keep her sane. She is often recalling memories and is always trying to find out information about her husband and daughter.

Rita
In "The Handmaid's Tale" Rita is a Martha, an infertile woman assigned to a commander as a servant, doing simple house chores like cooking and cleaning. She has a negative attitude towards Offred and handmaids in general. She even says that she would go to the colonies than be forced into sexual labour as a handmaid.

Commander Waterford (Fred)
In "The Handmaid's Tale" Fred Waterford is a high-ranking official in Gilead, known as a commander. He is the husband of Serena Joy and the head of the household where Offred is a Handmaid. He initially seems to be a kind and even sympathetic character, playing scrabble with Offred and getting her items and information. But further on his actions reveal a complex and cruel personality.
