Mr. White and Herbert are playing chess, Herbert wins. They are waiting for the Major to arrive because they have invited him round. There is suddenly a knock at the door.

No it's a waste of time, I never should have listened to those old tales.
Major is telling them about his travels when Herbert asks about the Monkey's Paw, and how it would grant wishes to the first three men who possess it and then throws it in the fire, Mr.White fishes it out again. To become the third owner of the paw.

Later the White family are discussing the paw after Major had left and how silly they had been to believe such things. As a joke Herbert suggests that Mr.White should wish for 200 pounds to cover the bills of the house. Mr White makes the wish but nothing happens, leaving him disappointed.
