Mildred had known of the death of Clarisse but forgot to tell Montag until he later at night had asked Mildred about the girl and that brought her memory back and reminded her of the accident.
Mildred discovers the book under Montag's pillow while he is talking to Beatty. he pushes her out of the room before she can say anything to him.
Montag breaks down and decides to show Mildred the books he has been stealing and keeping.
