- Offred
- Offred is the main protagonist, she is a Handmaid at the Red Centre. She previously had a husband named Luke and a daughter named Hannah. However, when they tried to flee the US, they got captured and Luke got taken away somewhere and Hannah was taken by an infertile couple and Offred was sent to the Red Centre. The name Offred isn't her actual name and it is not revealed throughout the novel. The name comes from her Commander, Fred Waterford and since she works under him, she is 'of Fred' so her name is Offred.

- Nick
- Nick is a Guardian, the Commander's driver and also a low-ranking member of the Gilead regime. He has a secret romantic relationship with Offred and he is the recipient of Serena Joy's (commanders wife) plan to get Offred pregnant as there can be a lower chance of her getting pregnant with just having sex with the Commander as he is getting old. Nick and Offred have a strong connection with each other by trusting and accepting each other.

- Aunt Lydia
- Aunt Lydia is one of the Aunts in the Red Centre. She is the top Aunt out of all the Aunts and she is responsible for the re-education and teaching of the Handmaids at the Red Centre. She is known for her strict, brutal, approach to the women under her change.
