Storyboard Tekst

  • What is Lexapro?
  • I need to take the medication for my hypertension (high blood pressure) - Metoprolol
  • Route of Administration
  • Absorption
  • Villi in the small intestine absorb the medication into the blood stream.
  • Grandma Rose had high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. Her doctor prescribed Metoprolol for her to take. The medicine makes the heart beat slower cause the blood pressure to decrease.
  • Distrubution
  • I make sure that the drug is distributed throughout the whole body!
  • Metoprolol is administered orally, meaning by mouth. Since Metoprololis a scored tablet, the tablet can be broken in half and be taken with water.
  • Metabolism
  • Once the drug is in a liquid form, it dissolves in the surrounding body fluid, like saliva and gastric juices in the stomach. Then the drug passes through the walls of nearby capillaries/villi in the small intestine and is absorbed into the blood. The main organ that is involved in absorption is the small intestine.
  • Excretion
  • No, I'm kidney!
  • HI! I'm the kidney!
  • When absorbed in the blood, the drug is distributed throughout the body traveling in the circulatory system. Some of the drug binds to circulating plasma proteins. Those travel throughout the body, while the unbounded ones leave the body.
  • The drug given in orally, which is absorbed into the blood is then subjected to metabolism by enzymes in the liver. It passes to the liver to then enter the general circulation.
  • I'm the LIVER! I use my enzymes to change the drug from cative form to less active.
  • The main organ that works with Excretion is the Kidneys. The non-activve part of the drug is later filtered through the kidneys. They are subsequently excreted through peeing.
