Hey! Can I ask you a question? We learned about SAMR Theory of Technology at professional development and I was a little confused. Do you think you could explain it to me?
Yeah of course!! Come follow me to my classrooom for a second!
Basically the SAMR Theory gives teachers ideas on how to implement technology. SAMR stands for Substitition, Augmentation, Modificarion and Redefiition. They're listed in a hierchy!
Oh! Like giving a quiz online or having students type a paper?
Yes exactly-- and argumentation is similar, but with functional improvement! Think of it as when you use a video to replace explaining a challenging concept!
Basically substitution is when you replace something done on paper with technology, but without functional change!
Modification is when technology allows for a task to be truly redisgned. Sometimes, I allow my students to make podcasts about a topic which can be accessed by the class. This significantly improves our classroom!
This is SO exciting! I can't wait to implement SAMR in my classroom!
Finally, redefinition allows for entirely new learning made possible by technology! This could be like doing a zoom call with people across the world! Isn't that neat?
That sounds fantastic!!
One month later....
Today, we will work with technology!Writing: We will type our paper!Math: We will record math videos!Sciene: We will make podcasts about the weatherSocial Studies: We will zoom call with students in Europe
Thank you so much for all your help. I couldn't have done it without you!
Hey you! I wanted to come in to tell you that I've been hearing all the kids talk about how much they're loving using techonolgy in your class! Great work with SAMR. I'm so proud of you.
