When the Loisels retuned, it was 4 in the morning. Mme. Loisel then suddenly realized the necklace she was borrowing was missing. Her husband quickly went to retrace their steps but had no luck finding the diamond necklace. Mme. Loisel kept this a secret from Mme. Forestier out of fear that she would get extremely upset with her.
The Necklace is missing!

The Loisels went looking around several jewelry shops to replace the lost necklace for a similar one until they eventually found an identical one. The price was 34,000 francs which was way more than they could possibly afford. They took out several loans and eventually paid everything off after 10 years.

After those 10 years, Mme. Loisel encountered Mme. Forestier with a child on a walk. She decided to tell her the truth about the necklace since the problem was over. Mme. Forestier was surprised and told her that the necklace wasn't a real diamond one, it was only at least 500 francs.
It was only a fake..
