Storyboard Tekst

  • Mick plays football with his dad at an early age
  • Mick makes the varsity team as a freshman
  • You're on the team!
  • Mick struggles to be the best
  • '"Touchdown Mick Johnson!" he yelled. "Your first touchdown!"' **The early establishment of Mick's adoration for his father and love for football sets the mood for the rest of the story. It helps the reader understand why certain decisions were made later on.
  • Mick starts taking steroids from his trainer
  • "Mr. Trahane tells me you're a promising player. Mr. Rooney says your attitude and practice habits are good. We start spring football here at Shilshole High next week. I'd like you to participate"(Deuker 46).** Mick and his friends making the varsity team was a big accomplishment, but it also means that they need to work harder and will soon face more challenges.
  • After quitting, Mick relapses during a game
  • "Drager didn't put in the work, so I could see myself catching up to him. It would take time, but I'd do it. But how could I catch up to guys who were just naturally stronger than I was and who didn't dog it"(Deuker 133)? **The difficulties came very early for Mick and he soon realized that he needed to work even harder to keep his reputation and spot.
  • Mick kills himself after being found out
  • " 'If you're after serious gains, there's other stuff that produces much better results much faster, stuff that a lot of guys in the gym use.' 'What other stuff?' 'You know what I'm talking about - gym candy"(Deuker 146). ** Peter, Mick's trainer allows for very easy access to steroids and seems like a reputable person. Mick trusts him for these reasons which will soon come back to bite him.
  • These will help you
  • "It had been nearly two months since I'd done an injection, but it all came back. I used the isopropyl alcohol to clean my skin and the needle. Then I injected myself." (Deuker 252) ** Mick had been doing well without steroids, but he wanted them to help push him through a very important game, though he knew the risk. Bringing them to a game was a move that definitely cost him.
  • "I put the revolver to my temple, felt the coldness of the muzzle there, took a deep breath, took another one, and pulled the trigger" (Deuker 297). ** Drew was trying to be a good friend and confronted Mick about his drug use. Mick did not want to be found out. He would be in so much trouble and his football career would be over, so he thought of his only way out. He shot himself.
