Louis XVI was guillotined in the palace de la revolution on January 21, 1793, and later his wife Marie Antoinette, met the same fate on October 16 1793. Their young son Louis Charles died in prison where living conditions were horrible. 
After seizing political power in France he crowned himself emperor. A skillful military leader napoleon waged war on various European nations and expanded his empire.
in April 12 1814, Napoleon was forced to give up his rule after Australian, Prussian, and Russian forces vanquished his army. after he was banished to exile he returned a year later to challenge the new ruler of France.
