  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Fear and suspicion are destructive.
  • One major theme of "Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is that fear and suspicion are destructive. One example that supports the theme is when Charlie accuses Les Goodman of being the alien, because his car is starting sporadically (p. 76 and 77). This shows that fear and suspicion are destructive because the neighbors pointing fingers ruins their relationship and trust with one another. Another example that supports the theme is when Charlie accuses Steve of talking to the aliens on is radio set (p. 81). This piece of evidence supports the theme because it shows that fear and suspicion make good friends dought each other, in turn, destroying their trust. A final piece of evidence that reinforces the theme, fear and suspicion are destructive, is when Charlie shoots a mysterious figure, coming out form the dark, that turns out to be his neighbor, Pete Van Horn (p. 83 and 84). This supports the theme because it shows that when someone is scared and suspicious, they can ruin another persons life. In conclusion, a main theme of "Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" is fear and suspicion are destructive.
