- Henry Il and Thomas1162 Thomas Becket is appointed Archbishop of Canterbury by Henry Il.Following many visits to Rome, Becket had acted as Chancellor for Henry,When Archbishop Theobald died, Henry felt Becket would carry out hisinstructions as the newly appointed Archbishop of Canterbury
- Becket resigns as Chancellor.His focus was to make the Church more influential causing him to fall out with Henry.
- Murder“Who will rid me of this turbulent priest’Four Knights took Henry at his word, hearing his outburst, and rode to Canterbury. “Where is Thomas Becket, traitor to king and kingdom?”Becket was murdered having been struck three times by their swords. Grim, a monk who witnessed the murder, tried to shield Becket and later wrote an account.
- The FalloutThe knights fled to the north of England. They became knights of the Holy Land for 14 years, having been forgiven by the Pope. 1174, Henry, who had long claimed Becket’s murder to be a misunderstanding, faced rebellion from his sons, who were backed by France. Henry saw this as punishment and he should serve a penance for the death of Becket.
- 1164, Henry attempted to pass laws called the Constitutions of Clarendon whose aim was to increase the powers of the King and limit those of the Church. Becket refuses these and is put on trial. Fearing for his safety, Becket flees to France.
- 1173, Pope Alexander III made Becket a saint and Becket’s blood, found on the floor of the cathedral, was thought to heal the sick, helping to establish Canterbury Cathedral as a popular pilgrimage site.
- Returns to EnglandJune 1170, Henry II, preoccupied with his line of succession, asks the Archbishop of York to crown his son a ‘junior king.’ (no real power) Becket was angry as successions should only be carried out by the Archbishop pf Canterbury. Becket appeals to the Pope who convinces Henry to allow Becket to return to England.
- Becket excommunicates bishops from the power of coronation and Henry saw this as usurping his power.
