  • A long time ago in a faraway land lived a tribe of hunters. They were content with everything they had. In their own eyes, they had everything: apart from the white bear. It was a magical creature and they wanted it very, very much. So they decided they would find this creature…

  • “Papa!” Atonota, the tribe's chief, heard his son's voice from across the river. “Can I come too?” “Joneto, how many times do I have to tell you? Your mama said you couldn’t come and so do I.” “But I want to find the white bear.”“Listen to me, I am the chieftain and I tell you, you cannot come; what I have said is final,” replied Atonota. But Joneto was determined. "I will go with the hunters and find the white bear," he said to himself.

  • The next day, an hour after the hunters left, Joneto went out and followed their trail. Just after he left, a big snowstorm swept up. The storm was mighty and it buffeted and tossed little Joneto around; he could barely retain his balance: but retain his balance he did. All of a sudden, a particularly large gust of wind came and threw him off his feet, and he tumbled down, down, down the slope, until bump, he hit his head on a rock and fell into a world of darkness.
  • Joneto opened his eyes, to find himself on the edge of a forest, and that the snowstorm had stopped. "I must have bumped my head on that rock," he thought. Still a little groggy, he slowly walked into the forest. He walked until he found a small clearing and sat down. He didn’t know why he walked there but Joneto felt as if something was drawing him. Just then he heard a growling in the bushes, which started to shake, so he started to run. “Stop where you are little boy!” a voice called out from the bushes; they stopped shaking, and out from those bushes came forth... a white bear.
  • “Who are you and how can you talk?” asked Joneto nervously.“Before I answer those questions, who are you and why are you in my territory?” replied the bear. “I’m Joneto and I got lost in a snowstorm,” said Joneto. “Can you answer my questions now?” “All in good time, all in good time,” said the bear, "now come with me, it seems you are injured.”So the boy followed the bear through the woods until they came across a cave, hidden by rocks and bushes.
  • “My name is Marenth,” said the bear, “now sit down and let me see your head.” Joneto showed the bump on his head to Marenth and the bear waved a paw over his head and the bump and all of its pain disappeared. “Let me take you home,” said Marenth. And so Marenth took the little boy home, and the hunters, who were originally out to kill the white bear, agreed to let it live among their tribe. Atonota instead of being angry at the boy was overjoyed that he had come back with the bear. Marenth lived together in peace and feasted all night and day for the next month.
