Brown and Tiggeman's essay explored how Instagram images of celebrities impact women's body image. They specifically examined whether adding disclaimer options (noting image alterations) or body-positive captions could mitigate negative effects. Their 2020 research found that exposures to thin, attractive celebrities led to increased body dissatisfaction and decreased body appreciation due to social comparison theory among female undergraduate participants, even though I was able to relate to it a lot. Neither disclaimer captions nor body-positive captions significantly improved participants' body image perceptions. The negative effects were mediated by participants' tendency to engage in appearance-based comparisons. The study highlights the pervasive influence of social media on body image and suggests that simple interventions, like captions, may be insufficient to counteract the negative impacts of idealized images.
