  • What are you doing?! Teaching him makes him uncontrollable and dangerous. If you give him an inch, he'll take an ell!
  • Moving on, the next letter is...
  • A is pronounced, ah.
  • Now, what sound does the letter A make?
  • If simply learning would spoil the best slave and cause him harm, I want to know more. I'm curious by how dangerous learning actually is. I know what to do!
  • Mr. Auld saw this, so he scolded Mrs. Auld. He said intervenes that knowledge would make even the best slave useless to his master.
  • My old master was cruel and whipped many slaves. Do they whip their slaves too?
  • There he is Thomas! He's your Freddy!
  • Later, Mrs. Auld decided to start teaching Frederick Douglass the A, B, C's.
  • Not a bad deal...
  • Hey! Are you hungry? I'll give you some bread if you teach me to read!
  • Therefore, Douglass thought, if Mr. Auld doesn't want me to learn, fearful for what will happen, I should do it!
  • Wonder what this is about...
  • Frederick Douglass was born in Marylaand. His enslaved mother could only visit him 5 times before she died. Because of this separation, he did not cry when she died. He was sold to a family in Baltimore. (Left to Right: Frederick Douglass, Mr. Auld, Thomas Auld, Sophia Auld)
  • Douglass knew some little white boys that were hungry. He fed them bread so that they would teach him to read.
  • Due to his new skill, Douglass has more questions and gets a new idea. He wants to run away to the North someday. Because he is young and scared, he does not run away yet.
