- According to the psychologists Anke Ehlers and David M. Clark, the way that trauma and the traumatic event is thought about, processed and experienced can and does greatly affect the development of PTSD and its symptoms, thus influencing a person's behavior and mental state. So how does this explain Joe's behavior and sudden change in personality?

- Let's use this model to evaluate and explain Joe's change in personality and behavior:Before his car crash, Joe enjoyed driving and thought that he was a good driver. These are his prior beliefs. During the accident Joe started to second guess his decision making. "Was the radio too loud and distracting?" "Was I not paying enough attention?"This is his cognitive processing during the traumatic event.Ehler Clark's model suggests that these two factors affect the way the traumatic memory is remembered by shaping the appraisals (judgements of oneself and past actions: accommodation assimilation), combine with the already fragmented and broken nature of the traumatic memory to influence Joe's threat perception.As a result, Joe's threat perception becomes overactive which results in a state called hypervigilance. This influences Joe's behavior by causing him to avoid cars entirely which further re-enforces and influences Joe's appraisals and his memory of the traumatic experience, which in turn contribute to his hypervigilance and influence his behavior in a terrible cycle.
