- Environmental Strategies· Pick a spot that has good lighting.· Try to limit or move away from background noise.· Be in the same room as the person you are talking to.
- Personal Strategies - Individual with Hearing Loss· Face the person you are trying to communicate with.· Put your back toward the sounds that you do not want to hear.· Place yourself at a good distance (about 5-10 feet away) from your communication partner.· Watch the speaker.· If you do not understand, ask for clarification.· Be assertive (but not bossy).· Coach your partner in a way that will make them happy to accommodate your listening needs.· Do not blame people for not speaking clearly.

- Language Strategies - Communication Partner· When repeating yourself is necessary, rephrase a misperceived message instead of simply repeating the message again, using keywords and clear speech.· Limit the responses available when asking questions.· Use common words to make your point.· Begin with information that is already known.
