- One day, Jacob was taking a leisurely stroll downtown and noticed a factory that was producing extensive quantities of pollution. he referred back to what he had learned in his science class the other day . . .

- Why yes! These smokestacks are a point source of pollution. Point sources refer to the source of the pollutants that enter the environment from specific locations.
- Jacob continued to wander about downtown until he stumbled upon a construction site which he noticed to also be acting as a source of pollution . . .

- Mmm, not quite kid. This site is a non-point source of pollution. A non-point source of pollution refers to a source of pollution in which pollutants are diffuse and originate from no specific location.
- After the construction site, Jacob decided to visit his local farm where he met Farmer Joe, who was spraying his crops with some sort of substance . . .

- An pesticide is a type of a persistent pollutant - a waste that accumulates in the environment and breaks down very slowly, if at all. This pesticide will kill the grasshoppers. Now get off my property before I have to use it on you too.

- Algal bloom is large increase in population of algae due to increased levels of nutrients in a water system and this may occur seasonally or be due to pollutants entering the lakes, most often in the form of nitrates and phosphates. Excessive nutrients such as these often enter the water sources as sewage or agricultural run-off and they lead to low oxygen levels in the water sources.
