  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Fear and suspicion can destroy a society
  • One major theme of Monsters are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is that fear and suspicion can destroy a society. One example is on pages 7-9 when all of the power went out and only Les Goodman's car started by it's self. this scene shows how fast fear and suspicion came over everyone and it they went straight to blaming Goodman. Another example is when a figure appeared in the street out of fear without question charlie just shot his shotgun at it. On page 14 it was revealed that the figure charlie shot was his friend Pete Van Horn, his excuse was "We're all scared of the same thing.... I didn't know it was some body we knew! I didn't know." Lastly at the end on pages 17 and 18 when everyone was screaming and scared even the aliens said "Just stop a few of their machines and radios.... and we shall go one to another and let them destroy themselves." I think what this is saying that making the neighborhood scared can cause them to destroy themselves. In conclusion this story is about the act of fear and suspicion and how it take over showing that the true monsters are us and our actions.
