  • One major theme of "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that mankind is its own worst enemy. An example of this is when Tommy says there are aliens on maple street. When Tommy says this, it raises suspicions causing the residents of Maple street not to trust one another. (pg 73-75) Another example is when Les Goodman's car turns on by itself. This supports the theme by showing that when the residents see this, it causes them to become skeptical of Les Goodman making matters worse. They try to find a scapegoat to deflect suspicions from themselves, making more of a ruckus. (pg 76-81) The last piece of evidence supporting the theme is when the figures explain the outcome of the experiment. It shows how in bad situations, people always turn on each other when they need each other most. (pg 85-86) All of this evidence supports the theme that mankind is its own worst enemy.
