- Langston Hughes was born on February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. He published his first poem in 1921. He attended Columbia University, but left after one year to travel. His poetry was promoted by Vachel Lindsay, and his first book was published in 1926. He wrote countless works of poetry, prose, and plays. Hughes died on May 22, 1967.
- Langston Hughes was important to the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a time when whites started to recognize significance of African Americans in 1921. Around this time, his poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” was published in The Crisis magazine. He enrolled at Columbia University but dropped out a year later and started working varius jobs around New York. The following year in 1924, he lived in Paris for a brief time, developing and publishing his poetry.
- Langston Hughes is known as a very important writer who included equality in his writing and poetry. He had a strong sense of racial pride and included that pride in his writing. Hughes promoted racism and injustice, and celebrated African American culture.
