- In 1066 A.D., the Norwegians invaded England from the north. King Harold of England defeated their invasion. Soon after that battle, Normandy led by duke William invaded southern England. Harold had to move his army quickly to the south. The two armies met in Hastings. In the battle Harold and his brother were killed. That ended the Anglo-Saxon rule and William became the new king of England.
- The second crusade was organized by France and Germany, lead by king Louis VII and the German emperor. Queen Eleanor of France also joined. These leaders argued and were unable to gain local support. The crusade failed. The Muslim leader grew stronger and recaptured Jerusalem.

- The third Crusade began as a result of the failed second crusade and the fall of Jerusalem back to the Muslims. King Richard was the leader of this effort. He developed a relationship with the leader of the Muslims-Saladin. Richard and Saladin signed a truce.

- The crusaders in the Fourth Crusade went to the rich city of Constantinople. They destroyed Christian artifacts and attached women. The Pope was mad that they did these things. The crusaders never reached the Holy Land. The Byzantines never forgot what the Catholics did to them.
- The popularity of the Crusades hit France and Germany. In 1212 AD the Children´s Crusade took place. It included people of all ages and classes. A majority never got past Italy. As time went on the Crusaders left the Holy Land. The Egyptian Muslims beat the last of the crusades in 1291 AD.
- The Crusades in the Middle East were a surprise to the Muslims. It was difficult for them to bring a strong defense because politics divided them. But in the end the Muslims won. Their counter attacks were successful. They also saw the fight as a Holy war similar to the Christians.
- I am surprised about these attacks to take back Byzantine lands.
