- Prince Siddhartha was brought up with the greatest luxury and splendour,he would never have to ask for anything as he already had everything.All suffering was kept secret from Siddhartha.He was never to know about sickness,pain and death.
- Finding the answers
- During conception,Siddhartha's mother would dream that a magnificent white elephant had entered her body.Her pregnancy had lasted 10 months and she had felt no pain whilst giving birth.Queen Maya gave birth standing up and there was no blood or water. Once Siddhartha was born he was able to walk and talk.Lotus blossoms would appear in his footsteps.
- Asceticism

- The Middle Way
- Siddhartha was so affected by suffering that he could no longer live a life of luxury. He escaped from the palace and cut off his hair as a symbol of renuciation. He practiced meditation with 2 masters and still hadn't found an answer to his questions.
- Siddhartha practiced an extreme form of body mortification known as Asceticism. He fasted,held his breath for long periods of time,sat out in the burning sun all day and bathed in ice cold water.He suddenly became very weak from the lack of food and realised that if he didn't eat more,he would soon die.
- Siddhartha had decided to practice a middle way;a balance between the two extremes.Siddhartha had experienced life in a palace,life as an ascetic,indulgence and neither had worked.Neither had brought him any closer to his answer which is why he had decided to live both extremes.
