After having Curt solve her job crisis, Ifem starts to feel shame because her fellow American Africans are working multiple jobs just to stay afloat. This is a common imposter syndrome feeling amongst many immigrants when they come to America and start to achieve and be successful in life. She also started to feel the divide in class between herself and Curt, seeing as he could find her a job with one simples phone call, but she had to go to multiple job interviews and still hadn't found one.
I should have majored in engineering or something. Communications majors are a dime a dozen
...So I know folks in this other bigger place, but the good thing about this one is they'll get you a work visa and start your green card process
This is an experience many people with curly hair experience causing them to get relaxers which chemically damage their hair. This is not only a discrimination of hair but of race, seeing as the two go hand in hand. This discrimination towards curly hair is not only racist, but it forces assimilation into white European culture, eliminating the connection many cultures have with their hair. An example of resistance towards this racism is the Crown Act which was passed in California, making discrimination based on hair style and texture illegal.
Thank you
My only advice? Lose the braids and straighten your hair. Nobody says this kind of stuff but it matters. We want you to get that job.
As we can see, Curt is in love with Ifem, but he also see's her as a joke or just another character he can add into the stories he tells his friends. This can be seen as an exotisization or fetishization of Ifem because she is seen as this "new" and "interesting" person Curt and his friends love to talk about. This also gives Ifem the sense that Curt will never see her as a serious girlfriend or future wife, he just see's her as this sparkly new specimen that he can take out for a test run without having to fully commit even if he doesn't realize it consciously.
She actually went to the bathroom to look at her blouse!
