- The main character spies on the man in his room at midnight every night for 7 days
- On the 8th night the main character kills the old man by smothering him, then cuts up the body and hides it under the floor boards
- Police come to the house to investigate, the main character leads them through the house and starts talking with them in the old mans room
- The main character starts hearing his friends heartbeat from under the floorboards, starts to go crazy
- The beating of the old mans heart becomes too much and the main character admits to the crime
