Good Morning! Welcome back to my Wild Animal Show! Today I will be talking about Polar Bears and how climate change is affecting them!
First, let's discuss polar bears and their teeth! Did you know that polar bears have consumed soft food? They prefer soft flesh and blubber
Let's start our show!
Climate change has heavily affected the polar bears diet. Polar bears burn through over 12,000 calories a day! Because of the ice melting, the bears have to travel farther for food, burning through too many calories! Seals are a high energy food source for the bears, and they are hard to hunt, without the seals polar bears body conditions will plummet.
The farther the polar bears have to walk, the more they burn through their calories. The bears have also started to swim more because of the melting ice. When the polar bears burn more calories than they can replace, they start losing muscle and fat!
I'm here in the Arctic, bringing you to our next session about the ice melt, and how it has a huge impact on the polar bears!
Scientists have informed us that there is around 770,000 square miles less sea ice now than in the 1981 to 2010 median.
Because of the melting ice, the polar bears are being forced on whether to go to the land when the ice is melting for the summer or if they should stay on the ice and stick it out. When having to stay on the melting ice, they have to travel farther for food or even swim, which burns many calories!
Polar bears have actually adapted to ways of combating the unnecessary burning through calories! When prey availability is low, the polar bears will reduce their activity. They are also using shelter dens in response to low seal densities during the summer and winter.
Polar bears prefer soft foods, such as blubber and flesh.. The seals provide two thirds of the energy the bears need for the year. Since the ice has been retreating earlier now in the year, they are given less time to hunt food and begin to starve. The starvation has a huge impact on the bears body condition. They can burn through so much fat and even muscle when they go without food for days.
I hope you all enjoyed my episode today, and that you all learned a lot! Come back next week to find out how the oil industry is also affecting the bears
