There were several resource centers for Cuban refugees, like Freedom Tower or "Ellis Island of the South", which was an assistance center for those fleeing the revolution and needed help with housing and resettlement options.

Uncertain about the state of Cuba, thousands of Cubanos left everything behind to migrate to the Unites States, seeking safety and opportunities.

  • 1. What inspired your story or character? After reading about Operation Peter Pan, I was shocked to learn about the thousands of children who had to travel on their to the U.S. on their own. This inspired me to write from the perspective of a young teen, thus the character Sara came to be.2. What historical research or chapters did you use to build your historical novel?I used Chapter 15: Miami, Florida, ca. 1960-80 from Gibson's text, "El Norte" as well as Module 7: From Havana to Miami: Cuban Migration Cultural Transformation to help build my historical novel."Cuban Missile Crisis solidifies Cold War tensions. " (Gibson, 385) "Uncertain about the state of Cuba, thousands of Cubanos left everything behind to migrate to the Unites States, seeking safety and opportunities."(Gibson, 386)"Through Operation Peter Pan, Sara will join thousands of other unaccompanied Cuban minors to the U.S."(Gibson, 386)"...thousands of Cubans were seeking refuge in Southern Florida. There were several resource centers for Cuban refugees, like Freedom Tower or "Ellis Island of the South", which was an assistance center for those fleeing the revolution and needed help with housing and resettlement options." (Gibson, 387)"Little Havana, where a large demographic of Cubans have set up their businesses to cater to their community." (Module 7 Overview)"Through the Cuban Refugee Program, Sara's parents were able to reunite with her in Miami. The program serviced them with English classes and employment opportunities. Sara and her family have found a way to adjust to their new home in Miami."(Gibson, 387)

  • 3. What themes or lessons from El Norte did you want to highlight?I wanted to focus in on how the U.S. provided resources and programs to to the Cuban Community, which allowed thousands of Cubans to be able to migrate to the U.S. While not mentioned in the storyline, the U.S. has made certain exceptions and provided the Cuban community support compared to other Latino migrant communities who did not receive the same support from the U.S. government.4. Why did you choose to tell the story visually?By telling a story visually, the audience is able to be captured by the graphics and understand the storyline as the way the writer intended.5. What do you hope your audience takes away from your historical graphic novel?I hope my audience is able to take a different perspective of U.S. history and leave curious to dive in deeper and be able to do some independent research. I hope my audience is able to question the traditional U.S. history they were taught and seek the untold stories of those who helped build the U.S..
