- A period when society saw reason as a "light" that exposed errors, or mistakes and helped to solve problems and make life better.

- I believe the government should protect the rights of people and if not then the people should be able to abolish the government and create a new one.

- I feel as it was the government's duty to protect the "general will" of the people, American colonists largley rejected me.
- Baron de Montesquieu
- I greatly admired the English system of limited government, even though the concept of limited government did not start with me but I made them popular. My ideas are evident in the U.S. Constitution.
- I became known for my disliking of the Roman Catholic Church and blamed church leaders for keeping knowledge from people in order to maintain the church's power. I support Deism, God created the world and set it in to motion and allowed it to run itself by natural law.

- I learned that every Enlightenment Philosopher had something different that they believed in but in some way they all tied in together.
