The life of Martin Luther

- Hello, my name is Martin Luther, I was born in Eisleben, Germany in 1483.
- In the 16th century religion played a huge part in life. The Catholic Church had great power. I saw great corruption in this power, and decided to do something about it, this is the story.
- I joined the Augustinian order to become a monk and priest. 6 years later in 1511 I became Professor of Theology at Wittenberg University in Saxony.
- So, Luther saw many abuses in the Catholic Church, including simony, sale of indulgences and nepotism. He believed in justification by faith alone (Only faith in God would allow a person to go to heaven). So, he decided to write 95 theses against them, he nailed them to the church door at Wittenberg.

- Luthers' beliefs spread quickly with the help of the printing press. This is how the Reformation began, a protest against the abuses of the Catholic Church.
- After being very outspoken about the Catholic Church, he was called to the Diet of Worms in 1521, and asked to take back his beliefs. After not taking back his beliefs, he was excommunicated by Pope Leo X. It was then said that, if you had enough power, to take Luther prisoner and deliver him to them.
- Luther was 'captured' by the soldiers of Frederick the Wise, who was actually a supporter. He was taken to Wartburg castle and stayed for a year, disguised as knight George. In this year he translated the Old and New testament into German.
- From these protests, a religion called Protestantism grew, this religion then had other branches such as Anglican and Lutheranism.
- In 1525 Luther got married to Katherine von Bora, together they had 6 children.
- A civil and religious war broke out in Germany between the Catholics and Protestants which lasted nine years, The Peace of Augsburg in 1555 brought the war to an end. Luther died in 1546. Today there is still some conflict between the two religions.
