- Charlie is a developmentally delayed adult, with an IQ of 68. He goes to Ms. Kinnian's class for other delayed adults and he works as a janitor at a plastic box company. Charlie gets recommended for an experiment where his IQ will be tripled. He has to do a series of tests.
- Climax
- Charlie is chosen for the experiment and he gets the surgery that will make him more intelligent. But they don't know whether or not the surgery will work, or how long he will stay smart, before regressing down to his original IQ again.
- Falling Action
- The surgery has worked and Charlie keeps getting smarter and smarter. He is learning new languages and even surpassing his doctors. He moves into the lab to further his research on this topic. He no longer works at the plastic box company because he's increased intelligence has made people uncomfortable.
- Resolution
- The surgery begins to fail. Both Algernon and Charlie begin to go back to their old selves. Charlie even accidentally goes back to Ms. Kinnian's class.
- Charlie goes back to his old job at the plastic box company
- Algernon dies and Charlie makes a little grave for him. He tells Ms. Kinnian to put flowers on his grave because he decides he wants to move away from New York
