Stella is apart of the Vignes family who started a town called Mallard. The townspeople know her to be the clever one. The author states, "Stella, the clever one, would have predicted that the town would be distracted" (Bennett 7). Stella decided that it would be best on the day of the Founder's Day dance that they leave because the town would be distracted by not paying attention to them.
Stella's passion is to stay in Mallard and to become a teacher to work at Mallard High. "Stella wanted to become a schoolteacher at Mallard High someday" (Bennett 10). Stella's dream is to be a schoolteacher because of her love of education and the kids that live in Mallard.
Stella took running away from Mallard to New Orleans differently from her sister, Desiree. "Maybe, practical as she was Stella recognized that they could earn more money in New Orleans, send it home and help Mama better that way" (Bennett 14). Stella cares for her mother to help her out financially instead of just wanting to run away to go do her own thing.
Desiree finds Stella trustworthy and because of that she can tell Stella anything due to the fact that her sister knows how to keep as secret. Desiree says, "Telling Stella a secret is like whispering into a jar and screwing the lid tight. Nothing escaped her. But she hadn't imagined then that Stella was keeping secrets of her own" (Bennett 14). Stella being able to hold secrets gives the readers insight that Stella has her own desires that she hasn't released to anyone else yet. Desiree returned back to Mallard after so many years and encounters her mother after so long. Desiree knows that Stella has passed for white and so does her mother. "Now her sister had decided she'd rather be white and her mother blamed her because Stella was not there to blame" (Bennett 23). Since Stella is not there to take the blame for leaving without their mother knowing. Desiree has to take the hit even for Stella making the decision to pass for white.
