  • The sunlight is the start to the food chain. Energy enters through the sunlight and is converted into food by producers. The green algae are the producers. They create their own food out of sunlight and water. by They are the source of all food in this food chain. They have 100% of energy available to them.
  • The crayfish is the primary consumer, or the first level of consumers. After eating the green algae, the crayfish consumes 10% of the energy from the green algae. Crayfish are omnivores, meaning they eat both plant and animals.
  • The muskrat is the secondary consumer, or the second level of consumers. The muskrat only consume 10% of energy from the crayfish(or 1% from the green algae). Muskrats are also omnivores.
  • The raccoon is the tertiary consumer, or the third level of consumers. After a raccoon eats a muskrat, the raccoon consumes 10% of energy from the muskrat (or 0.1% of the original 100% from the green algae). Raccoons are omnivores.
  • The Red Fox is the quaternary consumer, or the fourth level of consumers. They are the top of the food chain and the energy pyramid. The red fox consumes 10% of energy from the raccoon (or 0.01% from the green algae). They have the least amount of energy in the energy pyramid. Red foxes are omnivores as well.
  • The mushrooms are the decomposers, or detritivores. They break down the biotic wastes and dead organisms and return the raw materials to the ecosystems. They are “nature’s recyclers”. They help start the food chain all over again.
