Now, where was I? Oh yes! "And we came here to the concentration camp Auschwitz, and we knew that from here we will not come out anymore. We knew the stories--that they will gas us and throw us in the ovens. This was 1944... We knew everything. And here we were." Pg159

"And here they put me my number." Pg186 On my arm, 175113. "But from another room, someone approached over."..."He was a priest."..."'Seventeen is a very good omen."..."It ends with 13, the age a Jewish boy becomes a man."..."Added together equals 18."..."The Hebrew number for life.'"..."I started to believe." Pg188
Vladek shares what it was like after being captured. The Jews were forced into trucks that would bring them to Auschwitz.
But after a long while, the Germans heard news that the Americans were coming. They abandoned us and the Americans took care of us. Eventually, I was able to go home. The war was over!
The Jews were forced to run in the cold and put on prisoner clothing. Then when they got inside their arms were branded with a number to identify them.
"In the snow they threw to us prisoners clothings. They never even looked on what size they threw."..."The shoes were wood shoes."..."They took from us our names [and gave us numbers]." Pg186
Vladek shows Art his number and then tells him about a priest who visited Vladek and gave him hope because of the numbers on his arm.
Vladek tells Art how the war ended and how his life could begin to go back to normal.
