- Aminah finishes a tough day working at her family’s bakery, heedlessly striding with two loaves of spare bread in her hands. She heads to the park to enjoy some bread and take a load off—her favorite pastime activity. Out of the corner of her eye, she notices a strange girl sitting on a bench.
- I wonder who that is? I don't recall seeing her around here...
- Hi…! I don’t think i’ve seen you around here, the name’s Aminah.
- Oh…? Alright then, how about…Fujo! Fits you. Would you perhaps like some bread? It’s on the house.
- ...
- Reluctantly, Fujo takes the bread.
- You’re looking a little…rough, Fujo. Had a bad day? You’re all drenched from the rain a while ago!
- Well, erm, let’s cheer you up a little bit! See those swings over there? Come on!
- ...
- We’ve both had bad days I guess. I had a horrible day at work. Quite embarrassingly got scolded by my own dad! But hey, it’s nice to have some peace and quiet around here. Speaking of quiet, maybe you could try telling me your name again?
- They approach the swing set.
- Oh well, it’s totally fine! It’ll have to be Fujo for now. You know, for someone who hasn’t spoken a word, you make a good friend, Fujo.
- ...
- Fujo looks up to Aminah with teary eyes, a faint smile peeking through her features. Suddenly, Fujo leads Aminah to an area she hasn’t seen before. Tucked away on a street, several cardboard boxes are laid on the floor along with a blanket and a backpack containing what seemed to be basic necessities.
- Oh dear, is this where you’ve been staying?
- Looks like we both have stories to tell.
- *nods*
- Fujo sits them both down on the blanket. Together, they—at least one of them—spent hours basking in the sunset talking about all their good days, bad days, and everything in between. Aminah tries her best to figure out what Fujo’s been trying to say in a laughter-filled mess of attempted sign language and (horrible) guesses, sharing stories with a side of leftover bread. Sometimes, a little bit of compassion and the ability to understand can truly go a long way.
