Tan Tock Seng born in Malacca in 1798 and ventured to Singapore in 1819 at the age of 21 to start a small roadside business.

The Chinese#160;settlers would go to the temple would go to the temple to give thanks for their safe arrival in Singapore from China. Thian Hock Keng temple is one of the oldest Chinese Temples in Singapore. It became a national monument in 1973 along Telok Ayer Street.
He donated same money#160;to build the Chinese Pauper Hospital in 1844. It was build to serve the poor. It was later renamed Tan Tock Seng Hospital to honour his contributions.
After Mr.#160;Tan passed away, his family continued to donate money to build more hospital wards.
