- King Darius sent ambassadors to Greece to ask for Greek earth and water. If the Greek would do so, it would be a sign that they accepted Persian rule.

- The Athenians and Spartans both killed the Persian ambassadors. In 490 B.C.E. King Darius sent about 15,000 foot soldiers and cavalry across the Aegean Sea to Greece for war.
